The prompt for this project involved reinterpreting "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar", and creating a new role, aesthetic and design for the storyline. I decided to reinterpret the film as a cabaret musical on stage, drawing inspiration for cabaret, neoburlesque, LGBTQ+ nightlife, LGBTQ+ history, Leigh Bowery, German expressionism, absurdism and fetishism. I researched through books, newspapers, magazines, online articles, films, interviews, through performances and exhibitions, etc. Finally, I designed the concept, characters, world, stage and costumes for the show, realizing a costume worn by the character Chichi, on a number where she tries to catch the attention of men on the road to hitch hike. the costume is fun and flirty and further enhanced by the animatronics embedded in the eye breasts which allows them to wink.
